What a year of rsts for A en
Baker Anderson, MD.
She
nished her three-year medical
residency in pediatrics. She
moved f rom Ok l ahoma to
Clinton. She got married. She
also became the rst pediatrician
to have a practice at GVMH.
“Some families have been driving an hour
each way to see a pediatrician,” says Kyle
D. Adkins, administrator, physician clinics.
“We are pleased to now o er a pediatrics specialty at GVMH and to have
Dr. Anderson lead the way.”
A DOCTOR IN THE MAKING
Dr. Anderson says her love of medicine
started on her family farm, where she helped care for three younger sis-
ters and a menagerie of goats, cattle, horses, lizards, a llama, a hedgehog
and other animals.
“You see the circle of life,” she says. “It got me interested in medicine.”
Dr. Anderson discovered pediatrics while in medical school. “I thought
this is absolutely the best thing in medicine,” she recalls.
Dr. Anderson’s enthusiasm for pediatrics continued during her resi-
dency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where she
cared for medically complicated children, such as premature twins and
triplets.
When GVMH started recruiting for a pediatrician, it was a perfect t,
Dr. Anderson says.
“I was originally raised in Ellington, a very, very small town of about
,
people in southeast Missouri,” she says. “My parents are now in
Columbia, Missouri. Clinton is just what I wanted. It’s smaller, homey,
safe and oriented toward raising a family. I love that.”
SETTLING IN
Dr. Anderson and her husband, Chad—along with their
two toy fox terriers, Toby and Tucker—are getting to know their new
community.
Outside of work, Dr. Anderson loves to bake, cook and garden. “I’ll
de nitely be looking for tips for how to grow the biggest spaghetti squash,”
she says.
At GVMH, she’s getting to know her new little patients.
“I love the idea of meeting newborns in the hospital and following them
as they grow,” she says. “I can’t wait to get to know the kids of Clinton and
to have a long-term relationship with them as their trusted doctor.”

New beginnings
What is a
pediatrician?
Children often sit on chairs
designed for their height
because their legs are
shorter than an adult’s.
Toddlers drink from sipping
cups because they don’t
yet have the skills to
handle a regular glass.
These items recognize
that kids and grown-ups
are different in a lot of
ways.
Pediatricians recognize
that, too.
Pediatrics
is derived
from the Greek words for
child
and
treatment
. And
that’s the essence of a pe-
diatrician: a physician who
is trained in the treatment
of children.
Why choose one?
Pediatricians specialize in
the physical, emotional,
mental and social develop-
ment of children—from
birth through adolescence
to adulthood. As your
child’s primary care pro-
vider, a pediatrician can:
Treat acute illnesses
(such as strep throat) and
chronic ones (such as
asthma).
Give your child all the
necessary immunizations
that can help protect him
or her from some serious
diseases.
Offer you advice on how
to help keep your child
healthy and on common
parenting issues, such
as discipline and toilet
training.
Guide you in anticipat-
ing your child’s needs
through the years.
