longer true—state-of-the-art bariatric
surgery is now offered at Golden Valley
Memorial Healthcare (GVMH).
“People don’t have to travel long dis-
tances to get this surgery,” says Brent Bell,
MD, a general surgeon at GVMH. “We have
an expert team assembled right here that
is very capable of meeting all their needs.”
Leading that expert surgical team is
Dr. Bell himself. He completed a bariatric
surgery fellowship at the University of
Missouri in 2010, and he performed the
procedure on hundreds of patients before
coming to GVMH last year.
HOW IT’S DONE
According to Dr. Bell,
the three most popular types of bariatric
surgery are:
Adjustable gastric band.
An adjustable
band is used to belt the top of the stomach,
creating a pouch that holds only a small
amount of food.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
This involves
reducing the size of the stomach and re-
arranging the intestines, Dr. Bell says. Less
food is taken in and absorbed.
Sleeve gastrectomy.
The surgeon forms
the stomach into a thin, banana shape,
which helps curb hunger and food intake.
It’s often the best option, Dr. Bell says.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
Bariatric surgery
may be a good choice if you have a body
mass index (BMI) of 40 or more or if you
have a BMI of at least 35 and health is-
sues linked to being obese, such as type 2
diabetes or heart disease.
“If you are significantly overweight and
have tried diet and exercise programs that
just haven’t worked for you, talk with your
doctor to see whether you are a candidate
for the surgery,” Dr. Bell says.

Losing weight can be hard. Sure, some people manage to shed pounds
by eating healthy foods, exercising or taking medications.
But
those strategies don’t always work—especially for people who are
severely overweight. For them, bariatric surgery may be a viable op-
tion.
It used to be that people in the Clinton area who wanted this
weight-loss surgery had to leave town to get it.
