The nonprofit helps babies, children and adults in many ways. Older adults especially benefit, says Deanna Hendrich. She leads the GVMH Development and Communications team and the foundation’s programs. “Key focus areas include heart health, cancer and diabetes,” Hendrich says. “Our board feels strongly about supporting patients who deal with these illnesses.” Older adults often find themselves coping with one or more of these health concerns. The good news is, the foundation steps in to help GVMH meet its vision to make a positive difference in the health and wellness of each life it touches. HELPING CARDIAC PATIENTS “The foundation replaces equipment annually for our cardiac rehab patients,” Hendrich says. “We have more than 1,000 visits every month in Clinton, Warsaw and Osceola, and our patients definitely put the equipment to the test.” Recently, the foundation raised funds for the walking track in the Clinton facility, Hendrich says. During the past five years, the foundation has invested nearly $200,000 in cardiac rehab. HELPING PATIENTS WITH CANCER AND DIABETES For cancer and diabetes, help from the foundation centers on individual patients. The foundation’s diabetes walk, along with gifts throughout the year, assists patients who cannot pay for prescriptions and supplies, Hendrich says. The funds also pay for classes so patients can learn how to make lifestyle changes to be healthier. “We don’t want patients to go without either medications or education because they can’t afford it,” Hendrich says. The word cancer scares everyone. The foundation has two funds to help people dealing with a cancer diagnosis: Outpatient Treatment Center Oncology Fund. This fund supplies items to help keep patients comfortable, such as snacks, pillows and Meeting the needs of our community blankets, when they receive treatment. The Sandy Houchen Hope Fund. This fund helps patients with immediate needs, such as gas cards, to get to and from appointments and treatments outside of Clinton. “When your life changes because of your health, the last thing you want to worry about is how you will pay for what you need, where you will go to receive care, or even how you will get there,” Hendrich says. “A local hospital foundation can see a gap, find people and resources to help, and then meet the need. We believe in what we do.” Ready to make a difference? Gifts to the GVMH Foundation are tax-deductible.
